Career in the Armyസൈനിക ജീവിതം
I was born and brought up in Chavakkad, in Kerala. I joined the Indian Army in 1968, at the age of sixteen, and served for forty years — in field and staff appointments across the country, rising through the ranks to command — until I retired in 2008.
I commanded a field artillery regiment during the Kargil War of 1999, in the Dras sector of Jammu and Kashmir. I was the first commanding officer from the entire Indian Armed Forces to be inducted into the operational area in that war. The planning, organisation and conduct of every major battle in the Dras sector was a responsibility I carried, and I have never regarded any of it as my achievement alone.
On Republic Day, 26 January 2000, the President of India presented me the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) for that service. I was one of only three from the Regiment of Artillery to receive it for the war. I have always taken the medal to belong as much to the men who served the guns alongside me as to myself.
In 2008, commanding a mountain artillery brigade at Binaguri Military Station, I directed one of the largest rescue and relief operations in the Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal during that year's destructive flash floods; the timely work of the troops of my brigade saved the lives and property of thousands.
Across those years I also spent more than eleven years as a senior faculty member and head of department at several of the Army's training establishments and at IMTRAT, the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan, and three years as Director, Recruiting, at an Army recruiting office.
കേരളത്തിലെ ചാവക്കാട്ടാണ് ഞാൻ ജനിച്ചതും വളർന്നതും. പതിനാറാം വയസ്സിൽ, 1968-ൽ, ഞാൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ ആർമിയിൽ ചേർന്നു; രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ ഫീൽഡ്, സ്റ്റാഫ് നിയമനങ്ങളിൽ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച്, ക്രമേണ കമാൻഡ് സ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക് ഉയർന്നു — നാല്പത് വർഷത്തെ സേവനത്തിനു ശേഷം 2008-ൽ വിരമിച്ചു.
1999-ലെ കാർഗിൽ യുദ്ധകാലത്ത് ജമ്മു കശ്മീരിലെ ദ്രാസ് സെക്ടറിൽ ഞാൻ ഒരു ഫീൽഡ് ആർട്ടിലറി റെജിമെന്റിനെ നയിച്ചു. ആ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ, ഇന്ത്യൻ സായുധ സേനയിൽ നിന്നാകെ പ്രവർത്തന മേഖലയിലേക്ക് നിയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ട ആദ്യ കമാൻഡിംഗ് ഓഫീസർ ഞാനായിരുന്നു. ദ്രാസ് സെക്ടറിലെ എല്ലാ പ്രധാന പോരാട്ടങ്ങളുടെയും ആസൂത്രണത്തിലും സംഘാടനത്തിലും നടത്തിപ്പിലും എനിക്ക് നിർണായക പങ്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു; ഇതൊന്നും എന്റെ മാത്രം നേട്ടമായി ഞാൻ ഒരിക്കലും കരുതിയിട്ടില്ല.
2000 ജനുവരി 26-ന്, റിപ്പബ്ലിക് ദിനത്തിൽ, ആ സേവനത്തിന് രാഷ്ട്രപതി എനിക്ക് യുദ്ധ സേവാ മെഡൽ (YSM) സമ്മാനിച്ചു. ആ യുദ്ധത്തിന് ആർട്ടിലറി റെജിമെന്റിൽ നിന്ന് മെഡൽ ലഭിച്ച മൂന്നു പേരിൽ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു ഞാൻ. എന്നോടൊപ്പം പീരങ്കികൾ പ്രവർത്തിപ്പിച്ച സൈനികർക്കും കൂടി അവകാശപ്പെട്ടതാണ് ഈ മെഡൽ എന്ന് ഞാൻ എപ്പോഴും കരുതുന്നു.
2008-ൽ, ബിനാഗുരി മിലിട്ടറി സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ ഒരു മൗണ്ടൻ ആർട്ടിലറി ബ്രിഗേഡിനെ നയിക്കുമ്പോൾ, ആ വർഷത്തെ വിനാശകരമായ മിന്നൽപ്രളയത്തിനിടെ ഉത്തര ബംഗാളിലെ ജൽപായ്ഗുരി ജില്ലയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ രക്ഷാ-ദുരിതാശ്വാസ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിലൊന്ന് ഞാൻ നയിച്ചു; എന്റെ ബ്രിഗേഡിലെ സൈനികരുടെ സമയോചിതമായ ഇടപെടൽ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് മനുഷ്യരുടെ ജീവനും സ്വത്തും രക്ഷിച്ചു.
ഈ വർഷങ്ങളിലുടനീളം, ഇന്ത്യൻ ആർമിയുടെ വിവിധ പരിശീലന സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളിലും ഭൂട്ടാനിലെ IMTRAT-ലും പതിനൊന്നു വർഷത്തിലേറെ ഞാൻ മുതിർന്ന ഫാക്കൽറ്റിയായും വകുപ്പു മേധാവിയായും പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു; മൂന്നു വർഷം ഒരു ആർമി റിക്രൂട്ടിംഗ് ഓഫീസിൽ ഡയറക്ടർ (റിക്രൂട്ടിംഗ്) ആയും സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു.
